Class Descriptions

SPORTS SKILLS CLASSES

ATTIRE: Loose fitting clothing and sneakers.

Age 3 – 4: Intro to basic sport skills. Child must be able to separate from parent and be able to follow directions. (Max 6 students)

Ages 4-Grade K: Basic sports skills: throwing, catching, kicking, and dribbling; learn basics of floor hockey, soccer and basketball. (Max. 12 students)

Grades K-1: Work on improving basic sport skills. (Max 12 students)

Grades 1-2: Continue to improve basic sport skills and learn to shoot a basketball and work on baseball skills. (Max 12 students)

Grades 3-5: Sports skills are further developed and incorporated into games. (Max 14 students)

CHEERLEADING

ATTIRE: Leotard or t-shirt with shorts or sweat pants and low-top supportive sneakers.

Kindercheer (Grade K): No prior experience necessary. An introduction to cheerleading motions and cheers with an emphasis on development of coordination, balance and strength. (Max 10 students)

Cheerleading (Grade 1-2): Continues with more complex cheers and movements. Introduces cheer dance techniques. (Max 10 students)

Cheerleading (Grade 3-5): Continues with more complex cheers, movements and complex dance routines. (Max 10 students)

Cheer Dance (Grades 1 – 5): Incorporates moves to music and cheerleading together. Students focus on dance and jumps. (Max 10 students)

NOTE: These classes are strictly recreational with no competition and are designed to introduce students to the sport of cheerleading. There is a $17 materials fee for a set of vinyl push pompom.

LET’S CHEER

ATTIRE: shorts and t-shirts with low top supportive sneakers, preferably cheerleading sneakers.

Level 1: Introduction to basic cheerleading motions, cheers, and dance routines. Introduction to basic stunting, jumping and tumbling. (Max 10 students)

Level 2: Continues to more complex cheer motions and dance routines. Basic tumbling techniques and more complex jumps and stunt sequences. (Max 10 students)

NOTE: These classes are strictly recreational with no competition and are designed to introduce students to the sport of cheerleading. There is a $17 materials fee for a set of vinyl push pompom/hair ribbons. These classes meet every week for approximately 20 weeks for 55 minutes.

DANCE CLASSES

CLASS ATTIRE: Leotard and tights. White ballet slippers for preschool dance and all ballet classes. Black tap shoes for tap classes. Black jazz shoes needed for jazz classes. Shoes noted will be required for the recital.

DANCE RECITAL: There is a recital fee collected mid-year which includes costume and production expenses.

Preschool Dance (Age 3-4): Introduction to dance concentrating on poise and balance, students learn ballet barre exercises, floor stretches, basic ballet technique and simple combinations which include plie, releve, tendu, bourees, curtsy, chasse, and rond de jambe. (Max 9 students)

Ballet I (Age 4-5): Students improve on ballet techniques taught in preschool dance and are introduced to more complex combinations. (Max 10 students)

Ballet II (Age 6+): Students continue to improve basic ballet taught in previous levels and are introduced to more extensive technique and challenging combinations. This class is for students with previous ballet experience. (Max 10 students)

Ballet III (Age 7+): Students advance in ballet movements taught in previous levels. Class offers most extensive techniques and more challenging combinations. This class is for students with previous ballet experience. (Max 12 students)

Ballet/Tap I (Age 4-5): Students improve on ballet technique taught in preschool movement and are introduced to more complex combinations. In addition, basic tap technique and simple combinations to include heel and toe tap, shuffles, toe heels, toe back and Irish. (Max 8 students)

Ballet/Tap II (Age 6-8): Students continue to improve basic ballet and tap taught in previous levels and are introduced to more extensive technique and challenging combinations. This class is for students with previous ballet and tap experience. (Max 10 students)

Jazz I (Age 6+): An introduction to jazz consisting of warm ups, stretching and simple combinations to include jazz square, step pivot turn, side touch and chasse step. (Max 12 students)

Tap (Grade 4-5): This class will introduce the art of tap to your child or continue to develop your child’s’ natural love of tap. (Max 12 students)

Hip Hop* (Grade 2-5): Introduction to a contemporary form of jazz thatincludes such styles as funk, street, and pop lock. Examples of these styles are best seen in many of today’s music videos (Back Street Boys, INSYNC and Brittany Spears). (Max 15 students)

* Attire should include t-shirt, shorts or leggings and supportive sneakers

Lyrical Dance (Age 7+): Introduction to Lyrical dance which incorporates a combination of jazz ballet and free style movements using today’s popular music.(Max 12 students)

BOOKS COME TO LIFE

Ages 4-5: This class will take your preschooler’s favorite books and make them come to life!! After reading a beloved story, the children will create a craft, have a play, sing a song or play a game that relates back to the book. Perfect for any preschooler that has an imagination or a preschooler to develop their imagination.(Max 8 students)

NOTE: There is a $15 materials fee for these classes.

Grades 1 & 2:  This class will center around a theme that is demonstrated through several books read at the beginning of class.  The class will then participate in an arts and crafts project and/or game activity related to the specific topic of the day. Each week the topic changes, as do the activities. The books chosen would be age appropriate as would the projects.

NOTE: There is a $15 materials fee for these classes.

ART CLASSES

PRESCHOOL ART

Age 3-4: Preschoolers will work weekly on developing their fine motor skills and dexterity through the use of different art implements. They will be exploring ways to create art using various tools and textures. Students will be introduced to scissors, glue, paint, markers, clay and more and use their imaginations. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING A SMOCK TO CLASS. MAKE SURE STUDENT IS TOILETED PRIOR TO CLASS.

NOTE: there is a $15 materials fee for this class. (Max 6 students)

KINDERART

Age 4-5: Children will work on fine motor skills with scissors and paper, markers and crayons, paints and clay. They will feel good about themselves and their abilities as they have fun expressing themselves and becoming more confident. (Max 8 students)

ARTS & CRAFTS

Grade 1-2: Children will experience a variety of materials and techniques including: paints, clay, illustrations, fabric art, weaving and much more. (Max 10 students)

Grade 3-5: Introduce children to a wide variety of artistic materials and techniques. Activities may include paints, clay, illustration, weaving and much more! Emphasis is on imagination, creativity and fun. (Max 10 students)

NOTE: There is a materials fee of $20 for this class. These classes meet every other week for 13 weeks for 1 ½ hours.

ART TO WEAR/GROOM YOUR ROOM

Grade 3-5: In the Art to Wear half of the year, children will make a variety of wearable items, ie decorated hats, t-shirts, bandanas, tie die, jewelry. To finish the remainder of the year, the children will “Make Over” their bedrooms by creating unique crafts and items. (Max 8 students)

NOTE: There is a materials fee of $25 for this class. This class meets every other week for 13 weeks.

DRAWING AND PAINTING

Grades 1 – 5: Grab your smocks, palettes, and berets and let’s explore the world of art! This course will focus on technique, art basics, and major genres of drawing and painting. Will begin with basic drawing and move to painting later in the course. We will work on developing observation skills, perception, and visual memory. Students will work on several skills each week along with some long-term projects. Building familiarity with art basics like shade, tone, perspective, proportion and the color wheel, students will work at their own pace to increase creativity and foster a love of art. We will also try out techniques used by some of the masters and explore several famous periods of art. (Max 10 students for Gr. 3-5, Max 8 students for Gr. 1-2)

NOTE: There is a $20 materials fee for this class. This class meets every week for 1 hour for 20 weeks.

SCRAPBOOKING 4 KIDS

Grades 4 & 5: Join us for an introductory kids scrapbooking program!  There will be a variety of fun projects and activities. Some projects will require photos and others can have photos added at a later date. Spend some time this summer taking a few pictures about yourself and what you have done over the summer - consider the theme "all about me" - and have 15 of your favorite photos with you when class starts in the fall.  We will use papers, tools, photos and journaling for enriching afterschool activities. Look for a materials list later this summer. Class size limited to 10 students.

NOTE:  There is material fee of $25 for this class.


SEWING 4 KIDS

Join us to revitalize the art of sewing.  You will create a “Tote Bag” with coordinating cosmetic bag.  This project will take you from beginning to end of the process from starting with a pattern, stitching, using a sewing machine, lining your bag and finishing it up by embroidering your initials or other embellishments.  This class will provide you with the enjoyment of creating your own Tote that can be used for School or other activities.  Class size limited to 10 students.

Note:  There is a material fee of $20 for this class.


OKINAWAN KARATE / TAE KWON DO

Grades 1-5: Learn principals of self-confidence, self-discipline, and a good spirit. Includes calisthenics, learning punches, kicks and other basic techniques along with proper breathing. Helps students manage fear and anger properly. (Max 12 students)

NOTE: There is a $15 materials fee for this class. Parents must also purchase a karate uniform to be worn for this class. Uniforms can be ordered via internet, at a retail store, or can be from a previous school attended.

COOKING FUN

Grade 1 – 2: Children will create an appetizer, snack or dessert based on a weekly theme. All food preparation will involve cooking with various ovens, skillets, blender, etc. Students use recipes to create delicious treats. They learn about what foods compliment each other, as well as nutrition tips. Students measure out ingredients, and help with setup and cleanup. (Max 8 students.)

*Children with food allergies must attend class accompanied by a parent at all times.

ABC’s OF NUTRITION & COOKING


Grades 3 – 5:
  This Class will offer a fun and informative guide to learn how to make healthy food choices for snacks and meals.  Children will learn easy recipes featuring whole foods filled with vitamins and minerals and learn the importance of healthy eating while creating fun food.  Tasty fruit smoothies, yummy and nutritious protein shakes, outrageous recipes for soups, salads and snacks are some of the offerings in this program to help make and to taste.  Recipes and information highlighting healthy eating will be provided at each session and encouraged to be shared at home.  Parents will be treated to a presentation of the skills their children learned at the end of the Program.  It will a healthy experience for all to share.

FUN WITH SCIENCE


Fun with Science offers a hands-on approach to loving Science. The class will cover basic scientific concepts through experimentation. Topics ranging from electricity and magnets, sound and light, magic through science, grossology, science in nature and food science will be covered through age appropriate experiments. The class is 5% theory and 95% hands-on fun.


NOTE:  There is material fee of $25 for this class.


MUSIC CLASSES

PIANO

Grades 1-5: This beginner class will teach children to understand music by learning the basic essentials of the piano. Such as, learning to read notes, keep time and rhythm, and play easy to learn songs. Their will be written homework each week and the children should be encourages to practice about 15 minutes daily. (Max 3 students)

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

SPANISH

Grade K-2: An introduction to the language with a focus on basic grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, tenses and conversation as well as exposure to related culture. Children will learn through games, and other fun methods. (Max 10 Students)

FRENCH

Grade K-1: Basics of the French language as well as some cultural facts will be introduced through age appropriate games, songs and rhymes. (Max 10 Students)

Grades 2-5: Discovering short texts, poetry and songs children new to French will be acquainted to useful conversational skills as well as the basics grammar. (Max 10 Students)

TUTORING

LANGUAGE ARTS/ENGLISH


Grades K – 5:
 This Class will offer students individual instruction on the writing process from ideation (brainstorming topics and details) to synthesis (organizing information from the sentence structure to the formation of a paragraph).  A variety of graphic organizers and checklists will be used to develop students’ proficiency with the process:  pre-writing, rough draft/sloppy copy, and final draft.


MATH REASONING SKILLS

Grades 1 – 5:  This Class will offer students individual instruction on how to solve word problems by translating situations into math sentences then applying their computation skills.  Students will be presented with opportunities to build their problem solving abilities through the use of appropriate strategies; looking for pattern, writing an equation, constructing a table, making an organized list, guessing and checking, working backward, making a model, enhancing the knowledge they already have and building upon it.

NOTE: There is a $20 materials fee for this class. Classes meet for 1 hour for 20 weeks

 LONG VALLEY CHILDREN'S CHORUS

Open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders interested in singing.  The course will encourage healthy singing technique in a comfortable fun environment.  The choir will perform twice a year:  February and June.  (maximum of 75 students).

 GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY


Grades 1 – 5:  The purpose of this class is for the students to learn about the different aspects involved in the theatre while developing a love for the theatre, as well as, to instill a confidence in each student's ability to perform.  We will learn about basics in acting including voice and body warm-up; explore different acting techniques and exercises; learn about the various forms of theatre (dramas, comedies, monologues, musical theatre, etc.), as well as, look at other aspects of the theatre such as scene design and stage lighting.  This is an opportunity for children to develop their confidence and imagination thru the creative process. There will be informal class performances throughout the year.  

NOTE:  There will be a $25 materials fee for this class.

 TAKE THE STAGE

 Grades K - 2:   Students will explore the songs & dialogue from the, "Velveteen Rabbit"  We will end with the students performing short vignettes & musical numbers from the play.

Grade 3 - 5:  Students will work with selected scenes & musical numbers from, Tom Sawyer, The Little Mermaid & Beauty and the Beast. We will end with performing scenes & musical numbers from each one of these plays.

NOTE:   There will be a $25 materials fee for this class.


CHESS

Gr. 3 – 5:  This course will offer the basic fundamentals of Chess.  The course is open to all beginners, as well as, individuals who are looking to improve and fine tune their game.  Individuals will learn the rules of the game and basic strategies to challenge their game.  There will be monitored competition between individuals to test their mental capacity of the game and work on their strategy in a game format.
